A picture seen, a shape extracted, then mutated. As the idea develops I am directed by materials available, their qualities and properties, which are explored. Then the creation is forever influenced by the tactile quality, psychological associations, and uncanny undertones.

2D – For example, this drawing was triggered by seeing a sausage in netting. I became intrigued by the bulbous shapes pushing against the restraining network. I create this shape of definite sections, then added stitch mark, which casts complexity. This actual drawing I repeated, and mutated the individual sections further. From the second drawing I constructed a 3D piece of work – ‘Pull of Variance’

3D – This shape is based on the octopus eggshell. The Argonauta argo is a delicate paper-like, geometric structure. The protective role of the shell is reflected in the metal used, its outer surface patterns created with treating the metal. The red, velveteen innards and appendages interpret the maternal qualities of the structure’s function and heritage. The natural self-curling qualities of the velveteen, when cut into strips, invited the appendage aspect .
Work continued from the initial inspiration, the Argonauta argo, using organza, as well as other material such as dyed, deconstructed rope.
